What Is Shirini Nargili?

Shirini Nargili is a traditional Persian coconut cookie that’s especially popular during Nowruz (Persian New Year), family gatherings, and festive celebrations. Made with desiccated coconut, egg whites, sugar, and vanilla, these cookies are known for their soft, chewy center and lightly crisp exterior. Their delicate coconut flavor and melt-in-your-mouth texture make them one of the most beloved homemade sweets in Persian cuisine.

Although Shirini Nargili is often compared to coconut macaroons, it has a lighter texture and a more delicate sweetness. This classic Shirini Nargili recipe is simple to prepare with everyday ingredients, making it perfect for both beginner and experienced bakers. Whether served with a cup of Persian tea or enjoyed as an afternoon treat, Shirini Nargili is a delicious way to experience the authentic flavors of traditional Persian desserts.

What Does Shirini Nargili Taste Like?

Shirini Nargili has a soft, chewy center with a delicate golden exterior that is lightly crisp around the edges. These traditional Persian coconut cookies are naturally sweet and filled with the rich, tropical flavor of coconut, balanced by the subtle aroma of vanilla. Unlike many cookies that are buttery or dense, Shirini Nargili has a light, airy texture that melts in your mouth with every bite.

The finely shredded coconut gives the cookies a pleasant texture, while the egg whites create a tender interior that stays moist after baking. Some variations include a touch of lemon juice or rose water, adding a gentle floral or citrus note that enhances the overall flavor without overpowering the coconut.

This Shirini Nargili recipe is perfect for anyone who enjoys coconut-based desserts with a delicate sweetness. The cookies pair beautifully with Persian tea, coffee, or a glass of milk, making them an excellent choice for afternoon tea, holiday celebrations, or everyday treats. Steps to make coconut sweets(Shirini-Nargili)

How to Make Shirini Nargili

Step 1: Prepare the Coconut Mixture

Preheat your oven to 325°F (160°C) and line a baking tray with parchment paper. In a large mixing bowl, whisk the egg whites and sugar until smooth and slightly frothy. Add the vanilla extract and lemon juice, then gently fold in the desiccated coconut until the mixture is well combined. Let the batter rest for 10-15 minutes to allow the coconut to absorb the moisture.

Step 2: Shape the Cookies

Using a cookie scoop or two spoons, scoop small portions of the mixture onto the prepared baking tray, leaving about 2 inches (5 cm) between each cookie. Keep the cookies slightly rounded for their traditional appearance, or gently flatten the tops if you prefer.

Step 3: Bake Until Lightly Golden

Bake for 18-22 minutes, or until the edges and tops are lightly golden while the centers remain soft. Avoid overbaking, as the cookies will continue to firm up as they cool.

Step 4: Cool and Enjoy

Remove the baking tray from the oven and let the cookies cool for 5 minutes before transferring them to a wire rack. Once completely cooled, serve your homemade Shirini Nargili with Persian tea or coffee, or store them in an airtight container to keep them fresh.

Expert Tips for the Best Shirini Nargili

  • The egg whites should be at room temperature, not refrigerated.
  • Over-mixing will dry out the texture.
  • If the pastries turn too brown, the oven temperature is too high.

For a more special aroma, add a few cardamom seeds or a little brewed saffron.

  • For a chocolate version, add 2 tablespoons of cocoa powder.

The difference between homemade and pastry coconut pastries

Pastry coconut pastries are usually prepared using the indirect heat method. That is, the coconut powder is first slightly heated to release oil and remove its raw smell. This method makes the pastries last longer.

But the homemade version is simpler and faster. You just need to follow the exact ratio of ingredients to get the same professional quality.

Frequently Asked Questions About Shirini Nargili (Coconut Sweets)?

1- What is the secret to making soft and fluffy Shirini Nargili?

I followed the recipe, made them and were a disaster. I think there is a mistake in translation and instead of “coconut powder” which is dried coconut milk, there should be instead dessicated coconut.
There should be extra caution when uploading recipes and they should be tried first as people spend money and time to make them.

Coconut powder is actually dried coconut and has nothing to do with coconut milk. This dessert uses dried coconut powder. All recipes and measurements are tested and then uploaded to the site.
